Resultados SDBA 2025 South Bay BioBlitz

San Diego Bird Alliance (SDBA) proudly hosted the SDBA 2025 South Bay BioBlitz project on iNaturalist, a community science project aimed to document the region’s rich biodiversity and encourage the community to participate. This project took place from late April through May 2025. SDBA hosted a series of 12 BioBlitz events, five of which were bilingual (English/Spanish), strengthening access to science and nature for diverse local communities. These inclusive events strengthened participation and education across language barriers, reinforcing our commitment to environmental justice and access. Our BioBlitz helped to document information for two larger community science initiatives: the City Nature Challenge and the Border BioBlitz, bringing regional, binational and even world-wide attention to the ecological importance of San Diego’s coastal and riparian areas.

SDBA’s BioBlitz events took place in areas where we have been working on habitat restoration for several years, including multiple locations in South Bay and parts of Mission Bay. Documenting the local biodiversity on those sites help support the scientific research and help us document the ongoing conservation and restoration efforts across those sites.

The iNaturalist project results show the results of all the events (at nine separate locations): 3,487 observations, 627 species, 478 identifiers and 234  observers through the duration of the project April 25-May 31. The top 3 most-identified species this year were the California Brittlebush, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron and the Savannah Sparrow.

We are proud to continue to host these events including bilingual programming. Who knows what SDBA is planning for next year, maybe a Binational BioBlitz!
