Olivia Arizmendi

Olivia is an avid birder who found joy and solace in birds during the early days of the pandemic. She challenged herself to bird at least once a day for a year and learned that silence and stillness are how we embrace nature fully.
She volunteers time, advice, and friendship everywhere she goes. Her proudest achievements have been as a mentor to underrepresented minorities in science and public health. She works full-time as an epidemiologist focusing on vaccine-preventable diseases.
Olivia was born and raised in Mexico City, where she attended the prestigious Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México for a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Research. She also holds a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and a PhD in
Microbiology from the University of Kansas. She lives in Escondido with her husband and daughter, who are also birding and nature enthusiasts.
